Getting Paid

Using Rock Band to promote yourself can generate an enormous amount of exposure for you and your music that would otherwise go untapped. But exposure aside, it can also create a new revenue stream for a band with the potential to be massive. This is an overview of how bands make money through Rock Band and how payments are delivered and received. Let’s get paid!

step 1

Setting a Price

Once your music is ready for primetime, there is one final step before the sales start to pour in – You need to set a price. Song prices are based on the Microsoft points system and can be set between $1 to $3 in fifty cent increments. This choice is completely up to the bands and labels although we are happy to provide our experience when you are making that decision.

Once a song has been released, thirty percent of the profits go to the song creator. The remainder is divided between Microsoft and MTV Games/Harmonix. So sell 1 million downloads at a buck a piece and say hello to $300K. Let’s work together and make that happen!

step 2

Receiving Payments

Payments are dished out through the XNA creators club on a quarterly basis and will be delivered through Gamer Beats or XNA depending on your chosen pricing option. If a revenue sharing agreement is in place, Gamer Beats will issue your quarterly percentage. If you chose the fixed rate option, payments will be delivered directly through XNA.

As an important side note: Payment through XNA directly requires a Windows Live ID for sign in as well as a Creators Club membership for issuing payments. Revenue sharing payments delivered through Gamer Beats require no additional memberships or fees.
